How did people meet before dating sites became so popular?

It seems everybody is going that route these days. So, my question is, what did people do before the advent of dating sites? Where and how did they meet? I dunno, it just seems like everybody is lost when it comes to meeting someone unless they've got a dating site to refer to...

we met in public places. Grocery stores, laundry mats. Or ended up having the same group of friends. Now days its too sterile and cold to meet new people. They want financial portfolios, credit history, and a preplanned of your future events in case they might be interested.... I like the old fashioned ways. Just chance meetings that turn into something more.
Reply:I have never had a gf. But I believe before the advent of online dating, people met other people at clubs and bars and through mutual friends. Also, at school (college, high school).

Reply:Well I've never ever been to a dating site and don't plan on it. I guess people just meet by friends or coincidence. The normal way you know.

Reply:They went with whoever came along. The boy next door, the guy from down the pub. Now with internet dating you can actually shop for a partner. It just gives you more to choose from.
Reply:HAH! nobody I know uses that crap. Everybody finds people from school, or friends friends and such. Dating sites seem lame to me, and most the people I know have the same opinion. It's better to get to know the person and be friends before you get into all the dating crap.
