Is meeting people online the standard way to meet new people now?

With all the ads for match.com and eharmony.com, I'm wondering...several people have told me that this is the best way to meet people since "everyone" is online...I can't imagine introducing someone to my friends and saying that we met on the internet. Is this just me, or is this now the normal way to meet people?

Echoing lamarlingtonidol's answer, it's just another method of meeting people. It's possible for people who are unafraid to share information to get to know a lot about each other, so that when they *do* meet in person, there might be no secrets left. I know it probably seems strange to many to consider yourself as having "online friends," seeing how you may have never met in person nor talked on the phone, but I think it's possible. Feelings are feelings, regardless of the communication medium.
Reply:This is a new normal way to meet people.
Reply:nope.

getting a life involves getting off the computer
Reply:i agree. wouldnt want to meet anyone like that - but is becoming very very popular now...
Reply:ya its kind of a sick evolution of society. I guess the internet speeds things up.
Reply:I would be hesitant as well . I just picture two computer geeks falling in love. Pimples and all.

But my brother who is not a dork has met a girl online who herself is not a dork. He will visit her next week. I've heard that it works for a lot of people.
Reply:i agree, its the desperate way to do it! how can you get to know a person over a computer?''you cant'' and would never travel to meet a person either!!
Reply:only for those that are desperate.
