How can you meet Japanese people in california without being involved in schools?

I wonder how i can meet, help,, or talk to Japanese people in CA... when most of the ones that come to usa are students, already have a bunch of friends who are either ESL students and who they meet everyday and they have host famlies, thus they don't need to and they don't look outside of that circle..

To me, it looks like they are perfectly fine with their circle of ESL students, school related people, and host famlies.

But i'm interested in them, and their culture and Japanese langugae. But i'm just a hispanic person that doesn't travel. so all the Japanese i will ever have the possibility of meeting, are the ones that come to usa.

then how can i make connections?

Here's what i tried and didn't work:

1. Craig list: NObody answers and the 1 or 2 that have...they are not very interested in meeting. so i don't even know why they answered me.

2. Going to a school's conversation partner program: They see me and they are disappointed because i'm not a "real american" acc to them.

I'm sure myspace has a group for Japanese in California.
